International Midwives Day was celebrated at Heart 2 Heart Birth Center on May 3rd, attended by the Sanford Chamber of Commerce with a ribbon cutting ceremony and an official reading by Sanford's Honorable mayor Linda Kuhn of the Proclamation of International Midwives Day. The proclamation was presented to Heart 2 Heart Birth Center by by Gov. Crist. International Midwives day has been observed in over 50 nations since May 5, 1991. Former Gov. Lawton Chiles was an avid supporter of midwifery care. Gov. Chiles' Childbirth initiative was to have 10% of Florida babies born outside of the hospitals with Florida Licensed Midwives by the year 2000, to lower healthcare costs to taxpayers. Currently midwives still deliver about 3% of Florida babies.
